  1. Prep
    1. Check the labels on the meatballs, marinara, and sub rolls to confirm they contain no nuts, peanuts, zucchini, mustard, mushrooms, shellfish, or cheese. Mince the garlic and tear the fresh basil leaves into small pieces.
  2. Simmer Meatballs
    2. Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the garlic, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, for 30–60 seconds until fragrant but not browned.
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 2 clove garlic, 0.5 tsp dried oregano, 0.2 tsp red pepper flakes
  3. 3. Pour in the marinara sauce and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the meatballs, season lightly with salt and black pepper, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are heated through to 165°F (74°C) and the sauce is thick enough to coat them.
16 piece fully cooked frozen beef meatballs (Aldi), 2 cup marinara sauce (Aldi), salt, black pepper
  4. Assemble and Serve
    4. While the meatballs simmer, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Split the sub rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through, and warm them on a baking sheet for 3–4 minutes until soft and just toasted.
  5. 5. Tuck 4 meatballs into each warmed sub roll and spoon extra sauce generously over the top. Finish with the fresh basil leaves and serve immediately with napkins.
